Solar car builder Lightyear is one of the darlings of the Dutch industry. An example of how you can develop a car that runs on solar energy on Dutch soil with a dose of courage, intelligence, and creativity. A unique achievement and a story that many people want to be a part of and identify with.
But even for such companies, there is sometimes a strong headwind. Lightyear experienced this at the beginning of 2023 when they went through financial difficulties. We had been working for the company for some time and, of course, stood by them when the storm was at its fiercest. The phones of the management were ringing off the hook with media requests and investors needed to be kept as informed as possible. Together with the management team, a strategy was rolled out, with the interests of the employees and the company itself at the forefront, and communication was done both internally and externally about what was exactly going on. These were painful but valuable moments and eventually, a rescue operation was launched, which we could help with our expertise and advice. Meanwhile, the company has become more stable and is working hard on a new future with new investors.
